    The bold and the beautiful

Colour, especially when applied to the walls of our home, can be a very emotive subject. What is in fashion today may be dated tomorrow and I've been the victim of this. Many years ago I painted the walls of my hall, stairs and landing in yellow with the wood painted in burnt orange gloss, a colour scheme picked from the Dulux catalogue and that looked fantastic. For about 6 months.

What I've learnt over the years is to keep it simple, a feature wall can be a striking addition to a room and should the fashion or your tastes change then you only need to repaint one wall as opposed to the whole room.

This room in Sidmouth was transformed with a very simple colour scheme, the busy wallpaper was replaced with a bold deep blue and the walls and ceiling finished in bright white. To complete the look the wall unit was also given a coat of white satin wood before being put back up.

The finished room now feels bigger and brighter, despite the dark blue, and reflects the feel of the nearby sea.
